The Berlin Porn film festival is like nothing you have seen before.
It is thousands of porn loving, sexuality exploring, happiness promoting, curiosity provoking people drawn together to one little cinema to celebrate human sexuality captured on screen. It is a very necessary festival. It offers film makers who create art that includes pornographic content a space to screen their work. It allows us to celebrate with others who are like minded in thinking that we must return sex to the screen in all its varied and realistic glory and see all the incredible ways people from around the world are choosing to frame sex.
This year Permission 4 Pleasure had two films screening. We will do a separate post about that experience.
This is a review of some of the amazing films we saw. Political, artistic and fucking good sex.
Context for these reviews: Going into the festival I didn’t really have an idea about what the films could and would be like. I assumed it was going to be not porn like on the internet. But other than assuming the content would be more interesting than an hour long clips 4 sale video I wasn’t really sure what I would see.
Without further ado, here are some of our reviews from the Berlin porn film festival
NOVA DUBAI – Gustavo Vinagre
Nova Dubai was a film that lingered on my mind long after I finished watching it. It was a beautifully staged and performed piece about friends who need to disrupt the construction that is happening in their neighbourhood, ruining childhood memories. Something about the slow trickle of interesting snippets from memories about each character through their own anecdotes made for a perplexing mix of sweetness and sombre reality.
Schnick – Schnack Schnuck – MAIKE BROCHHAUS and SÖREN DISORDER
We are just so pleased porn like this exists! They describe it as “A lovable pornographic comedy, playfully posing questions on the subject relationship, love, sex and jealousy in addition to its explicit sex scenes” which perfectly nails this film. It is enjoyable to watch the four leads go about, finding themselves. Beautifully shot, nicely stylized (colour pallet to font to costume all a-game!) this is the type of narrative film that doesn’t force gratuitous sex into scenes that are otherwise not sexual, this film does sex justice. It tells narratives about sex, with sex that should be told, explored and elaborated upon. For the sake of the children!
The Papillion – Julie Simone
This film was so simple and so beautiful. The nature imagery juxtaposed with a woman having her shaved and then cocooned was so striking! I can’t say much else about it but that it was sublimely intoxicating, even though it was a distressing act to watch.
House Boy – Pandora Blake
I found the politics and story behind the creation of this project particularly interesting. I have always thought (and cinemas history tells us) that through limitation and censorship some of the best creative work arounds have been forced. House Boy, a film made in the wake of the recent UK Laws(read amazing summary/ thoughts on Pandoras blog) is a lovely little tale of a mistress dealing with introducing a new house boy to her fold.
Custom Queer Comandos – Jacqueline Mary
Has one amazing squirty cum shot all over a pastel pink guitar! Do you need another reason to watch a film?
The Mask – Minus is Valido
This picture doesn’t do the colour of this film justice. A political porn from Barcelona about a ghost running through the streets turning regular citizens into perverts. All the scenes are public space scenes with reactions from by standers that are amazing!
The Berlin porn film festival is one of those festival experiences that leaves you feeling excited for the future. It was so amazing to see the porn community making so many inventive, beautiful and engaging films.
